52 Dates a Year

Having fun together!

On the road again – Astros vs Phillies April 27, 2010

We flew to Texas for a few day getaway that included a night in Houston so we could catch a game at Minute Maid Park.
Daylight
Saturday, April 10, 2010 we started out with a stadium tour at 2pm. The tour took us to field level where we got to sit in the dugout and walk along the warning track around the whole park. We also got to sit in former Pres. Bush’s seats and see the owner’s suite! It was a fun way to see the ballpark and definitely worth the $9 charge.
Dugout
After the tour we decided to wait for the gates to open so we could score a free Throwback jersey shirt. We met a couple interesting guys in line & the hour or so passed fairly quickly, although the sun got hot & the sky threatened rain when it wasn’t sunny!
Lower Level
The game started at 6:05pm and was against the Philadelphia Phillies. We saw a couple firsts for the season…the first (and 2nd) Astros home run and the first Astros lead which unfortunately did not lead to the first Astros win. Some interesting things we learned about the park during the tour…
* There is a hill in center field that is in play
* The American Flag pole is on the hill in center field and is also in play
Hills?
* When there is an Astros home run the train that sits above left field moves along the track.

Chris’s Review
From the outside, closed Minute Maid park may be the ugliest park I have ever seen, but once inside when it is open, it is actually a pretty great ball park. Doing the tour was fun, and we got to go everywhere in the park, EXCEPT walking on the grass. It was nice to see another park so close, especially before the game.

Our hotel was close to the park so after the game we went back and grabbed a beer before the game. We had dinner there which is a must whenever you go to a new park. Fajitas were definitely the way to go.

The Astros lost, but it was still a fun game. It didn’t hurt that the couple next to us was very friendly, and we were able to talk to them about the Twins, and about how the Astros were doing (NOT good).

Best Part: Food, and fun. The tour was definitely worth going early for.

Worst Part: Nothing from the date, great night.

Nikki’s Review
Taking the stadium tour was a lot of fun! We got to see parts of the ballpark that most people never do, including the broadcast booth and the media cafeteria, the fancy-pants dining area for the Diamond Club guests and the old time scoreboard up close! We had a good time at the game too…there was some excitement with the home runs & the people sitting next to us were fun to talk to as well.

Best part of the night: Early in the game, a young boy sitting in the front row of our section (upper deck) was eating a hot dog & when he was just about done he threw it over the edge. “Look Dad, it flew like a bird!” is what he said. We laughed SO hard! Also, just being out in a new city is always fun with Chris.

Worst part of the night: The hotel we stayed at was very nice, but they had a wedding reception with very loud music until 11:30pm and then the wedding guests ran the halls every hour or so until 6 am. Needless to say, we didn’t get a lot of sleep that night, but that’s not part of the date I guess.

RATING: 5/5

Weekend in St Louis March 17, 2010

We flew down to St. Louis the weekend of March 6, 2010 to visit our friends Shelly & Jeremy! Nikki’s Dad heard about a good flight deal & we were able to both fly round trip for a total of $228 which could not be passed up!! We didn’t have any reason to fly down except to hang out and visit which was awesome. However, we had no problem keeping very busy! We ended up going to Hodak’s, Schlafly Bottleworks (we took the tour!), Forest Park, the Boathouse, the St Louis Zoo and Ted Drewes!

Chris’s Review
We headed down to St Louis with almost no plan, and it worked out great. Our friends down there were in for the same type of weekend, so it was great just to be able to hang out with them. We ended up being able to hit the great St Louis Zoo, walk around one of the main city parks, and just enjoy the good weather. It was perfect to be able to get away for a few days, and I think that Nikki and I were really thankful for the weather, and being able to spend some good times with friends.

With the cheap flights to St Louis right now, I would definitely recommend it as a weekend get away.

Best Part: The weather couldn’t have been better. Definitely being able to sit by the side of a lake at the park to have lunch was great. It’s amazing how much better the weather can be just an hour flight away.

Worst Part: Sitting on the tarmac for almost an hour on both flights… but hey, can’t control everything.

Nikki’s Review
We always have a great time hanging out with Shelly & Jeremy. I’m lucky because Chris and Jeremy hit it off right away which makes it awesome for the 4 of us to hang out! This weekend was different because we didn’t have any set plans and it was nice to have a more relaxed pace. The weather was beautiful, the flight was only an hour (compared to a 9 hr drive!) and the company was fantastic!

Best Part: Lunch outside & walking around at the park and zoo…the temps got up to the 60’s!!

Worst Part: Getting up at 5:45am on Tuesday to fly home. Although, I booked the flights so I guess it’s my fault!

Husky Hockey Game in St Cloud February 20, 2010

On Saturday, February 13, 2010 we drove up to St Cloud, MN to attend a men’s hockey game and hang out in downtown St Cloud. There were 8 people total who went to the game and 6 of us stayed overnight at the Kelly Inn which is within walking distance of downtown!
Harry Buffalo
We had Gary’s Pizza & a couple drinks in our hotel room before heading out to MC’s Dugout for a couple more drinks before catching the MC’s shuttle to the National Hockey Center. We got our tickets and headed to our seats, only to find them smack dab in the middle of a section of UND fans. Seriously, we were surrounded!
our section
That would have been fine if the Husky’s had played well, but unfortunately they didn’t. You can read a game re-cap here, but I can tell you in 9 words…UND scores six unanswered goals in the second period. We actually left at the end of the 2nd and walked back to the downtown area. Some of us stayed out for a couple more drinks and others closed the bar down!

Chris’s Review
Hockey was a ton of fun, if only the St cloud state hockey team wouldn’t have given up 6 goals in a period. St cloud is a nice cheap place to go to for a nice weekend away, and being able to do it with friends was great. I would definitely recommend it to try and relive some of the college years. It has been a while since I ate room temp pizza in a hotel hallway at 3 am…

Best Part: Having a few drinks with friends and being able to talk, and hitting the bars in a different town.

Worst Part: Sitting in the UND cheering section, and watching a losing game.

RATING: 4/5

Nikki’s Review
Overall, the night in St Cloud was fun. I wish the hockey team had played better, but what can you do. We did get to meet a couple of Christy’s friends, hang out at a few of my old stomping grounds and only had to walk one way from the Hockey Center!

Best part of the night: The shuttle from MC’s and the first period of the hockey game. Also, Chris was pretty cute when he was drunk. 🙂

Worst part of the night: The second period where UND scored 6 goals to SCSU’s 0.

RATING: 3/5

Brave New Workshop: Brett Favre’s Christmas Spectacular – The Immaculate Interception January 15, 2010

For Robyn’s birthday (way back in September!) we decided to give her two tickets to see a show at Brave New Workshop. After some discussion we decided to see the Christmas show but unfortunately were not able to fit it into our schedule prior to the new year. So…Saturday, January 9, 2010 Robyn and Josh joined us for dinner at Green Mill (where you get a 25% discount on food when you show your BNW ticket for that day) and then we caught the late night show.

This year’s Christmas Show was really, really funny. They opened the show with a rap song about the Vikings and Brett Favre and besides one other mention, that was it for Mr. Favre. I think some of the favorites included “The 12 Days of Christmas” sung as My Mother Said to Me and My Father Said to Me in place of “My Truelove Gave to Me”, an attempt at videoconferencing with the parents and a couple skits that included a Santa suit!

We also stuck around for the post-show Improv session which proved to be pretty funny as well! Overall, a very good night filled with quite a few laughs.

Chris’s Review
Dinner with Nikki’s brother and girlfriend was great, and the timing worked out great to make it to the show. We all laughed out loud, and had a great time.

Best Part:Hearing all 4 of us laugh out loud! Sketch comedy is great when it is on, and they did a great job on the Christmas show.

Worst Part:Somewhat expensive… we did plan on a Saturday night, and I know sometimes there can be deals on the weekday shows (join the insider club). The 25% off food at Green Mill helped.

This is a great night for any couple that is just starting to date, or have been dating for a while. I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone that gets offended easily. Some of the skits are pretty political, so it may create some conversation after watching. RATING: 4/5

Nikki’s Review
We had been waiting to go to this show for so long that I was worried it might disappoint, but thankfully it didn’t! I guess my memory isn’t great because I didn’t remember most of the skits, but that’s okay!

Best part of the night: The two different versions of the 12 days of Christmas were hilarious and easily my favorite part of the show.

Worst part of the night: We were hoping to get a table in the bar at Green Mill to watch the Wild game but a) the bar was completely full and b) only the Cowboys/Eagles football game was on.

BNW puts on a few different shows each year and all the ones I’ve seen have been funny. The only drawback is that the tickets aren’t cheap, but for a night of good laughs it’s worth splurging every once in a while! RATING: 4/5
